Went back through my notes app, now that I have a mac. Came across thoughts I wrote on my phone back in high school late at night. I thought it would be fun to remind myself of these thoughts.
- i want to use tech to best solve the solutions we face today. but not in ways that reimagine futures that are so distant and unrelated from the status quo, but in ways that are tangible and grapple with the realities and problems ppl actually face. to not “reinvent” the future and, as a result, only create more problems, but to actually supplement current approaches to solutions in ways that would truly change people’s lives. ex: don’t do hyper loop bs, actually solve infrastructure issues and lack of funding for public transportation. if i can’t do that through policy making bc we know that that’s not fully effective (although maybe i could become a speaker or someone in congress that would convince both sides to do something), id do it through making bus tech cheaper to implement or by making access to public transportation easier through different tech that way. or, for instance, not solving climate change by trying to move to mars, but to create tech that would directly address it and problems caused by environmental racism. maybe by mitigating impacts of environmental racism in marginalized communities paired with working on new tech that would solve climate issues. or, by trying to provide better access to abortions and reproductive healthcare through new technologies or using certain softwares in ethical ways.
- tech is so vastly changing and evolving and growing. why not use it to push forward realistic and substantive solutions to problems that lie at a standstill today?
- there are so many areas of tech and innovations that invoke questions of ethics and consequences. and so many people (but also not enough as there should be) know this. but the answer of creating real solutions and progress doesn’t have to be through, for example, tech ethics or public policy. it certainly can be for some people, but honestly (and we’ve been knowing) regulations and restrictions don’t keep fields incentivized by profit in check. so rather than checking back against inevitable developments, why not help create and fundamentally structure the way the technology is being made. by learning as much as i can about the world and other fields, i can help create technologies and develop industries that don’t require mass recorrecting regulations, because we can better make technology that actually does improve our lives.
- i wanna live my life thru impact, purpose, etc. why else were we put on earth? i find my value thru uplifting others and creating solutions to problems. i wanna do it, and it’s exciting to work to explore more things, people, ways to solve more problems, the things in life. it’s so exciting
