Workview:
The dictionary definition of work, according to Merriam-Webster, is the “physical or mental effort directed toward making, doing, or achieving something.”
I will spend most of my life working. Therefore, it is something I will grow through, and that helps me become the person I want to be. It is not solely labor. My work determines who I become, who I surround myself with, what I spend my time on, and the end I am working towards (problem).
I work to learn about the world, develop myself, produce outputs that can positively impact the world, or put myself in a position to more effectively enact positive change, given my skill/ability set, experiences, and position. This may look like, for instance, making something impactful or gaining a better understanding of how the world works. I hope this impact takes the form of understanding people, bringing them joy, improving their lives, or uplifting them in some way I feel connected to.
Through my work, I hope to have fun and play. I want it to be authentic, energizing, fulfilling, and engaging. Through it, I want to live out my values more fully and experience an interesting story. Work is not good or worthwhile if it actively harms the world or conflicts with my morals and values (is low in integrity, unkind, pessimistic about the world, stagnant in nature, or would necessarily impede my health).
I also work to provide the life I desire for myself and the people around me: living in a larger city, being able to send my children to the best education of their choosing, and giving them optionality and opportunities.
Lifeview:
I believe we are here on this earth to experience the full range of human experience: to love, to connect with and learn from each other, to be kind to one another, to learn about what is here and how we got here and how we can leave it a better place than how we found it, to grow into the full, most complete versions of ourselves, to do meaningful things in pursuit of our Personal Legends, and, in doing so, leave an impact in whichever way we believe is most important and aligns with what we are most capable of doing.
We have found ourselves in a probabilistic near-impossibility evolved over generations. We owe it to ourselves, those who came before us, and each other to experience and explore it (to live). We ought to try to leave it better than how we found it in condition, material, or spirit for the world and the immediate people around us (family, friends, community).
I live largely in line with a virtue-ethics philosophy, although I’m very aware of my moral luck. I do not regard virtue ethics as a good rule for character judgment but rather more as a personal philosophy. To be good in life is to live with integrity, to find and live in alignment with one’s own values, and–as we learn and grow–to continuously course correct those values with the good while staying authentic. For the sake of brevity, I believe that to be morally evil is to intentionally move through life without regard or account for the consequences of your actions or the perspectives of those around you.
Concretely, some things that are important: ensuring everyone can create meaning in their lives, creating a more dignified world, and minimizing structural violence.
I am not religious, but I do have many spiritual beliefs about the world perhaps best encompassed by a mix of secular humanism, spiritual naturalism, and touches of naturalistic pantheism and Daoism. I am, however and likely contradictorily, also fairly superstitious.
